The great thing about formal dress is that you can wear them at so many different occasions, such as proms, dinners, weddings and evening parties. When you're shopping for formal dress you have to remember that the dress on the mannequin is just there for display. Armed with this knowledge you can now look to finding a formal dress that will flatter your shape best.

Pear shape is the most common body shape for women and this is where your hips are your widest point. An A-line dress, or Empire dress would be ideal. So imagine a typical princess gown with a billowing dress, this will swamp shorter girls, so instead think about a formal dress with vertical lines (which gives the illusion of more height) and also short skirts, as long skirts can leave shorter girls looking swamped once again.

Many formal events will have their own dress codes anyway, so if you aren't sure then you can check it before you go shopping! So when you're ready to buy your formal dress just remember that what you see on the mannequin isn't necessarily what you'll see when the dress is on you! So plan ahead, research your body shape and choose a dress that suits it and the occasion you'll attend.
